Kayleigh's First Trick or Treat Experience

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Our little Minnie Mouse did fantastic. She practiced at the Trunk or Treat at Hope Reformed on Saturday night. As soon as she discovered how easily the words "Trick or Treat" got you lots of candy, she was no longer interested in being carried or holding her mother's hand. She ran from trunk to trunk, waiting patiently for someone to acknowledge her and then she'd yell proudly, TRICK OR TREAT!!! Afterwards, she rarely needed to be reminded to say her thank yous ... but then she was off and running ... Thanks to Hope Reformed for giving us a chance to "practice!" We set out again on Sunday night, just do the block by our house. She was so excited, but we got ready WAY too early. So, we did a little photo shoot while we waited. After trick or treating for about an hour, we came home and she jumped RIGHT into her candy. After surveying all of her "goodies" she decided on the popcorn ball ... yup, a popcorn ball. She closed the night (while Mommy was bathing Benny and Daddy was still passing out candy) with a couple episodes of Mickey Mouse ... and hit the hay. She was bit. Here are a few photos to capture the milestone in her little life.

College Search - Never too early to start

by Kristi Van Dyk in

So, Hope College sent out its annual report this week. I was browsing through the information, looking at nothing in particular. Like she has a tendency to do, Kayleigh asked for whatever Mommy had ... She always has to mimic us. So, I gave it to her. As she took GREAT interest in "reading" a long, and not particularly engaging piece of work, I couldn't resist a photo op. Personally, I think admissions could do some creative publications with this photo shoot. Mackinac Island Weekend

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Sigh ... we knew it would be difficult, but we knew it was also important to the family. There were lots of highlights to the weekend as well as a few challenges! Highlights: * Dan proposed to Maria and we were there just in time to hear the news! * Lots of family was there: Dan and Rhonda's family, All of Bill's family, Kyle and Rebecca from Bob and Susanne's family and Grandpa. * We (Kayleigh, Benner and I) got to see Cabeto for the first time (or first time in SOOOO LONG) * It was BEAUTIFUL weather * God's splendor was apparent in all of the beauty around us * We got some fantastic exercise * We got to go to Mackinac Island!! (Steve and I haven't been in FOREVER, and Kayleigh and Benjamin have never been).

Challenges: * Arriving at the hotel at 9:30 with babies wide awake who usually are usually long since sleeping * NO sleeping the first night as we all shared a room, and little Benny recuperated from an ear infection * Spending 8 straight hours on the island with two little kids and no naps! * Settling down from a no nap day :( * Diarrhea for both after all of the stress and change (Kayleigh's causing some pretty awful conditions for driving home!) ... we MIGHT be over it now.

Here are some picture highlights that just made it worthwhile!

Introducing "Hands in the Dirt ..."

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Each time I say this I am reminded of high school freshman English when we watched "Dances with Wolves." There was a segment on naming in the Native American culture and as Kevin Costner earned his name, so it would appear that my son has earned his. It began about two months ago when we took Benjamin along to a friend's house (I'll keep names out because I don't want to embarrass people! Honestly, we think this is hilarious and aren't upset ... but no use calling people out when it's not necessary). My friend hadn't seen Benny since he was born. She took one look, and like most people, exclaimed about his size. "If he keeps going he could be a lineman for Michigan!" I chuckled and reminded myself of the promise I made years ago - for my babies - no football or hockey: too dangerous. (Not to mention TONS of potential for brain damage!)

Another incident, just a month later ... a different football enthusiast took a look at Benny ... his comment cracked me up. "You're headed straight for the line, buddy ... You're gonna have your hands in the dirt!"

Then again, yesterday, while visiting my mom's school, one of her fellow teachers came up to talk to the boys. Ryan was running around the halls and Benny was smiling in his stroller. The teacher came over and talked to Benjamin about being on "the line," and he told Ben he could practice "hitting his cousin - the running back." Alaina and I laughed ... yet another reference about my baby boy's giant size.

People literally stop me in the grocery store (usually when I have him in the Baby Bjorn and his legs hang down to my mid-thigh with his head tucked up under my chin) and comment on the huge-ness of my baby. I guess I'm relieved that they are done commenting on the huge-ness of my belly. It was far more difficult to take when complete strangers kept asking me if I was overdue at 6 months pregnant.

All of this to say, Steve and I have begun to refer to Benjamin as, "Hands in the Dirt." Sample evening conversation:

Kristi: Which one do you want? Steve: I don't care. If you're sick of one, I can take that one. (Then he usually suggests taking Kayleigh because she's a typical clingy two year old right now and tends to get on my nerves the fastest) Kristi: Eh ... I'm fine. I was thinking of taking her so I could get some good snuggle time. Steve: Okay, you take "princess" and I've got "hands in the dirt."

So I guess it's time to start reconsidering my stance on football ... OR maybe I'll just wait and see if his growth levels out. He has a few years before Rocket football begins. PLUS, the baby doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. He'd likely be "the gentle giant" over the fearsome, bruising lineman. Just look at that face ... does it spell aggressor to you?

[caption id="attachment_872" align="aligncenter" width="224" caption="In case you can't tell his sheer size from this photo: He's wearing a 9 month polo that doesn't cover his belly and a pair of 12 month khakis that just barely fasten at the waist"][/caption]

Family Nights ...

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Last week was the start of our "family nights." Daddy works from approximately 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and then, after the kids are in bed, works more from home (usually until about 10:00). So, finding time when we are all stress free to spend time together is pretty difficult. Steve stole my iPhone a week ago and blocked off days on both of our schedules for some "family night." This includes: making a meal together, eating together, and doing something fun as a foursome. NO iPhones, computers, or technology (unless it's Mickey Mouse watching) allowed. The first night was supposed to be personal pizzas and pumpkin carving. As it would happen the kids really only had the attention span/energy level for one. So, we did pizza making on Wednesday and pumpkin carving on Thursday. Here are some pictures highlights for the memory books: [caption id="attachment_863" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Watching Daddy intently"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_864" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Taking time to chat"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_866" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Like Father .. Like Daughter"][/caption]

Pumpkin carving was a little more of a Daddy/Daughter Date. Mommy had to take Benjamin to urgent appointment hours at the pediatrician and then run to Meijer pharmacy to pick up his amoxicillin for the ear infection. So, I missed Kayleigh's first pumpkin carving experience. Fortunately, Steve took some great photos, and Kayleigh had lots to tell me about it. Most commonly heard, "Momma? K's pumpkin is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY ICKY!!!! REALLY ICKY pumpkin!" But I also heard, "Momma? Daddy make kitty in my pumpkin ..." (It has a cat carved from a stencil .... nice work, Steve!)

Quotable Kayleigh

by Kristi Van Dyk in

The sentences coming out of my daughter's mouth are increasingly long and even more hilarious than the one before. She's getting very good at combining words and concepts that she knows to clearly convey the ideas she wishes to express. Here are few of the quotes and the images that captured her face when she uttered them. "Momma? It's cold. I need socks. I wear socks on hands so I not cold."

"Momma? I miss Daddy. He come sit down by Kayleigh's fire pit? I wait for Daddy to sit down by Kayleigh." (This was 10:00 a.m. ... she had a long wait that lasted less than 2 minutes)

"Momma? Momma! RafaEL in Benny boy's swing! RafaEL is swinging REALLY, REALLY HIGH!, Momma I get him." (Then proceeds to try to pick up the kitty ... I stop her to take the picture ... it was really adorable).

The final quotable requires a couple of back stories. (1). Bri babysat a while ago and Kayleigh fell in love with her silly bands. In fact, we had them, hidden in the back of Kayleigh's princess car for at least a month. Each time K happened upon them she'd go crazy and put them all over her wrists, talking the whole time about Bri's bracelets. (2). We went to return a large bag of pop bottles at the store and, as is typical, Meijers was a little flooded. 2 machines were down, 3 were full, that left 2 open for the long line of people and bottles. We patiently waited our turn (all three of us), and as we got up next, saw that two people behind us just had a few bottles. I didn't feel right letting them wait when I knew I would take forever. SO, I let the businessman go first. He took a few minutes, but after he was finished he walked up and said, "Here, you deserve this. You let me go in front of you and your little kids were so sweet. Take this return and by your sweet girl something fun."

Here's where the two collide. I walked Kayleigh down the toy section, with a businessman's bottle return burning a hole in my pocket. As we walked, eagle eye Kayleigh spotted them first.

"Momma! Mickey Mouse Silly Bandz!!! Momma! Mickey Silly bandz for KAYLEIGH!!! (This continued until I finally saw them and grabbed them ... exactly the amount we had from the businessman)." I grabbed the bands and after checkout gave my little girl her treasured bands. Her first words of gratitude??? "Show Bi Bi!!! Momma, take picture to show Bi Bi Mickey Mouse Silly Bandz"

Here's the pic we texted to Bri:

Favorite Family Shots Friday

by Kristi Van Dyk in

So I've been blogging ahead lately (writing two or three or four posts at a time and scheduling them to post one per day). BUT since the in the last two weeks, we have been so insanely busy, I haven't been able to catch up on blogging all of the fun/crazy moments. Each time one happens I say to myself, "That's bloggable." But when it comes to 9:30 or 10:00 at night, when I usually have time to blog, it just doesn't warrant too high on the priority list. I've been keeping up with the laundry (a never ending chore), keeping the cats from ripping each other to pieces, and trying desperately to rest enough to get my exercise in each day. All of it feels fairly futile with our "special events" calendar loaded as it is. I should just accept it, but somehow I keep trying. There's no way I'm going to be able to recap all of the cool events and fun of the last week, so I'll just post a few highlights with little stories along the way.

This first one really does most of the talking all by itself:

[caption id="attachment_845" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Our Little Minnie"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_846" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Our "Big" Minnie?"][/caption]

Mommy and Kayleigh had a GREAT Saturday at the Post Family Farm in Hudsonville with Grammy, "Uncu" Dan, Auntie, and RYAN! Daddy was at home with a little unhappy, stuffed up Benny boy.

[caption id="attachment_847" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Swinging Away"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_848" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Riding in the wagon"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_849" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Driving the barrel"][/caption]

Kayleigh loved picking pumpkins, eating donuts (she still asks for them for snacks days later), drinking cider, driving the barrels, and feeding the goats. She talked for weeks about going to the pumpkin patch to get her pumpkin; she's spent the last few days admiring the one she picked out. AND, as you'll see later, having her first "pumpkin carving experience." This SAME weekend our favorite cousin/nephew had his FIRST birthday party. Kayleigh LOVED the bubble machine that Auntie set up, and she thoroughly enjoyed having lunch at her own little table. In fact, she carried her little chair everywhere she could around the yard. We had a great day celebrating with our sweet little man!

[caption id="attachment_850" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Happy Birthday, Ryan!"][/caption]

Here's Kayleigh wishing Ryan a Happy Birthday: 10-14 Happy Birthday Ryan

That's it for this past weekend! But there's more coming this week!! We had our first "Family Night" and Kayleigh and Daddy carved their first pumpkin while Mommy took Benny to the doctor for his first ear infection. Many more fun photos on the way.

An Update on Coffee "Dates"

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Kayleigh and I have continued our coffee "dates." (See Coffee "Date") The coffee cake from Oostburg that I love so dearly is long since gone. BUT Daddy's 3 dozen Danishes are still around. Kayleigh has started calling them "Daddy's Danishes." As soon as Benjamin gets put down for his nap, she walks over to me, tugs on my pant leg and says, (Just like I do when I really want her attention). "Mommy, listen to K. Listen, Mommy." I bend down and look her in the baby blues. She says, "K eat Daddy's Danishes with Mommy?" I can't resist and here is what greets me across the table. Benny Loves the Blue ...

by Kristi Van Dyk in

I know, I know ... their loss to State was most unfortunate. But, my little baby boy still loves watching. Daddy was on a bike ride, so we wasn't there to join Benny in watching. Mommy captured Benny doing his best to carry on without Daddy. [caption id="attachment_832" align="aligncenter" width="224" caption="Watching the U of M/State Game from his saucer"][/caption]

Making Friends

We haven't been on tons of playdates with new people lately. BUT, we have been working on forming better bonds with the "friends" that live in the same house with us. Here are my two sets of little "friends."

It's that time AGAIN ...

by Kristi Van Dyk in

October 17th marks Benjamin's 5 month birthday. That means it's time to dig through Kayleigh's old pictures and put up a side by side comparison. I love these because people literally stop me at the grocery store to comment on how large my son is. Yet, when I put him side by side with his sister at the same age ... he doesn't seem quite so big ... Well, definitely not as fat! Kayleigh was a porker and now she's working on a second winter in the SAME SIZE CLOTHING. Tired Little Ones ...

by Kristi Van Dyk in

These last few weeks have been so insane. I thought fall and regular schedule would bring a slower pace of life. It hasn't really turned out that way. BUT, that's alright. We're all enjoying ourselves, growing, and learning. Here's the result of constant change ... (I don't have one of Benner, but he's just as cute when he sleeps too!) [caption id="attachment_816" align="aligncenter" width="200" caption="Throw your hands up in the air..."][/caption]

At Home Playtime

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Not every day is exciting ... (although many are much more eventful than I think they will be). Here are a few extraordinary moments on an ordinary day. (Okay, okay, so I forced a few for the camera ... Kayleigh doesn't normally spend her day kissing her brother). Can you tell that I love my life? Staying home each day with these babies (while stressful and frustrating at times) is my greatest joy. Thanks, Steve, for providing for us in such a way that this is possible. We <3 you! Photographer Mommy vs. Photographer Daddy

by Kristi Van Dyk in

In the last week both Mommy and Daddy took pictures of Kayleigh in the bath tub. Both are adorable in their own way. But what I find humorous is not so much Kayleigh in the pictures as to the moments Mommy and Daddy choose to capture. Let me give you examples. You can label which picture belongs to which photographer. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll Ace this quiz if you know ANYTHING about us at all :). (No pressure or anything) :) [caption id="attachment_801" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Name that Photographer #1"][/caption]

Kayleigh's New Skills

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Kayleigh has been working on setting the table. Here's the work in progress: (I know it's not lined up properly, but it's not bad for her first time ALL BY HERSELF). [caption id="attachment_796" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The work in progress"][/caption]

And here she is, totally and completely proud of all of her work. Seriously, you can't miss the pride - it's written all across her face.

Benny's Laughter

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Baby laughter is utterly contagious. I adore it when Ben laughs, and since he's a happy kid, he laughs often and heartily. It's so much fun to figure out just how to make him laugh. My dad discovered tickles under the chin; Steve discovered eyes closed to eyes popped open. I tickle him on his little feet and in his armpits. Here's a little video with a sample of just how fun his little laughs are.

Kayleigh's Bible

by Kristi Van Dyk in ,

About a month ago I began a Women's Bible Study class at our new church home, Calvary Bible Church. The kids and I pack up and are at church by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. They wonderful nursery workers entertain my toddler and just snuggle my baby while I get a chance to talk with other women about what the Scriptures say about marriage. It's always an opportunity for me to grow, and I always walk away refreshed (no matter how difficult it was to get the kids ready to go). Kayleigh must sense my joy at going, or simply pick up on the fact that I'm always juggling her, her brother and my Bible. Either way, she has latched onto my BIG Teal colored Study Bible. She sees it around the house and carries it to me. "Read heavy Bible, Mommy. Read Kayleigh heavy heavy Bible." I started reading her Luke 2 (anyone who knew me as a child will understand why), but she never makes it through the first 10 verses. :) Instead she says, "Kayleigh will read it now. K do it, Mommy." And grabs the Bible away only to flip pages and mumble to herself. This morning I got the idea that she ought to just carry her own Bible. We have several that were given to us as gifts when she was born. We've read them to her at nights during story time, but I never thought to put it out with the other Bibles. So, I went to her room and brought one back. Here, Kayleigh, this is YOUR Bible. (BIG GASP!!!) "Kayleigh's Bible? 1 Bible, 2 Bibles??? One for Mommy, One for KAYLEIGH??" Yes, Kayleigh, it's your Bible. "Oh Kayleigh read it now!" She then proceeded to jump up on the couch and bury herself in the pages. Atta girl, K. ...

Mom, of course, proceeded to snap pictures and take a video. Here ya go:

New Experiences for Benners

by Kristi Van Dyk in

Benjamin really loves new things ... I mean, he truly enjoys meeting new people, going new places, and seeing "life" from a different vantage point. He takes way better naps when we've done something entertaining, new, or different as opposed to those days when we simply stay home. So, I try to help him to explore a little, even if we're pretty much "stuck" at home. Today Ben spent some time simply "sitting" on the couch. He watched his sister do it for a quite a while, and was quite pleased when Mommy let him try. I didn't really get any spectacular smiles, but I do have him focusing quite hard at maintaining his balance.

[caption id="attachment_780" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Benners on the couch"][/caption]

Benny also had the chance to try the "jumpy" today ... much to his sister's dismay. (I know she's 2 years old and has far better things to entertain her, but she spent so many mornings playing in the "jumpy" while Mommy got her shower that she just can't seem to give it up.) At any rate, after a very long conversation (and plenty of tears on Kayleigh's part), she agreed that it was definitely Benny's chance to get a turn in the jumpy. (BUT she made sure to be clear that she WAS NOT interested in sharing her princess car. I felt safe in saying that I wouldn't make her). Ben wasn't quite sure about it at first ... he never fussed, but he definitely had a more surprised than normal face on. We'll give it a little time ... I know he'll be jumping around in it soon enough.

[caption id="attachment_781" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Not so sure on the jumpy just yet"][/caption]

My Strong-Willed Child

by Kristi Van Dyk in

** No fears, I'll keep this disgusting potty talk free ... it's far more about my daughter's personality than it is her bathroom habits. So Kayleigh's potty training (PT for purposes of shortening this post) adventures began several months ago when she began talking about Mommy and Daddy's bathroom tools. After bath time she'd say things like, "Mommy's potty over there." Or "Paper for the potty, etc" It was clear she was interested in what goes on there. I bought her a potty chair and she has been sitting on it many times while I'm using the potty as well. She always felt quite independent and occasionally would say, "Sit on potty, no pants," So we were casual about it. This past week I decided that it was time to try an actual method. So, during nap time I do what I always do when my child hits a new phase/trend ... search the internet and read mom-blogs. I narrowed it down to two "free techniques" (I'm not into paying for a book, etc) and began a conglomeration that worked with our lifestyle.

Kayleigh did BEAUTIFULLY yesterday. She had no accidents and managed to do "both" kinds of business in the bathroom. She also made it through Meijers with a completely dry diaper (holding it for over an hour and half), and was THRILLED to get some "big girl underpants." (aka pull-ups.) I went to bed last night feeling quite confident about our path towards potty training. Then, this morning dawned ... I swear a different child woke up ...

She wanted NOTHING to do with the potty. She wouldn't sit on it, she wouldn't touch it. She screamed bloody murder each time I suggested it. I tried to use MMC as a motivator and here's where life got interesting. Mommy said, "If you don't sit on your potty you may not watch Mickey Mouse." Kayleigh said, "NO POTTY. WATCH MICKEY." So, I put the remote next to me, guarded for safe keeping and went about feeding Benny his morning bottle. I heard some activity in the bathroom, but since she had previously "made the potty sing" without any reminders from Mom or instruction on what to do, I let her be. Very shortly, she comes trotting her bare bottomed self into the living. "Here ya go Mommy." And she hands me the toilet lid. I shake my head and say, "You're not watching Mickey until you sit on the potty."  "NO POTTY! WATCH MICKEY! I GO AWAY! I GO AWAY!" And off her naked behind scampers. A few short moments later, she's back, this time with the inside basin of the toilet in her hands. "Here ya go Mommy." We repeat our earlier conversation, ending the same, "...I GO AWAY! I GO AWAY!"

The next she returns with plenty of thumping and bumping, grunting and yelping. She is dragging her potty behind her. She places it squarely in front of the television, replaces the basin, and snaps on the lid. She opens up the lid, grabs her book, and places her naked behind on the toilet seat. "Mommy, I sit on potty. Watch Mickey Mouse now!" There she sat for 30 minutes, watching Mickey Mouse. She did NOTHING to make the potty sing. That is, until, I told her she could get off of the potty. She promptly returned to the kitchen, grabbed her snack and peed on the floor. I might consider this a sign that she just wasn't quite ready were it not for the patterns that began to emerge.

(1) She peed only on hard surfaces, never the carpet ... (2). She always had her "accidents" immediately after I asked her to sit on the potty chair (3). Any previous success she had had was completely unprompted and un-pressured. (4). The more I talk to her about it the less interested she becomes in trying ...

I put her down for her nap and again consulted the literature. It would seem that she's exhibiting tendencies of a "strong-willed child." Why it never occurred to me that my independent spirit, my precocious little girl would have a mind of her own, I don't know. I can't believe these past few months I was chalking it up to her not being physically or intellectually ready ... when in fact, it might be just that she doesn't want to because it's the very thing Mommy wants her to do ...

We'll see what happens when I stop asking and stop pressuring and simply leave it up to her. If it doesn't work, I'm still a little on the early side, so I can abandon and try again later ... I don't want to make it a power struggle though, and I won't fight with her over something like this. I have plenty of teenage years to worry about "battles," I might as well start picking the right ones now.

Here's some pictures from this mornings "battle of the wills."
